Technology-Related "Addictions": The Dark Side of Technology Overuse
While the Information Systems (IS) community has investigated mostly how to promote IS use, it has been mostly ambivalent to "the dark side of technology overuse", which includes phenomena such as technology-related addictions. Technology-related addictions are non-substance, behavioral addictions that become evident through excessive interaction with information Technology (IT) under conditions of psychological dependency. They often generate typical behavioral addiction symptoms. Behavioral and neurobehavioral studies suggest that it may exist in many IT contexts, including but not limited to, online video games, mobile email, social networking websites, and auction websites. In this talk, Professor Ofir Turel will lay the theoretical foundations of this concept, and describe a series of empirical studies that describe a range of potential individual, familial and organizational outcomes of technology-related addictions.
