Prof. Tamar Weiss: Collaborative Interfaces for Intervention and Social Action Research

Seminar on March 14, 2012: In recent years we have been exploring ways in which technology supported collaboration paradigms can be used to achieve targeted behavioral and social action research goals. We make use of the Mitsubishi Electronic Research Laboratory’s DiamondTouch table, an electronic surface that affords simultaneous multi-user multi-touch events.  A computer display is projected onto the surface, providing visual content that is calibrated with touch.

Our initial studies involved the use of the StoryTable application, a shared interface that displays a virtual world where children can move around objects and characters using their fingers as pointers. Children with High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (HFASD) were encouraged to interact by recording successive story segments. The results showed that a structured intervention program led to a significant increase in the children’s level of involvement and to positive effects on key behavioral and communicative skills. Moreover, these positive effects were noted in other, non-narration tasks.  Additional applications, the Join-In Suite and No Problem, a Cognitive Behavioral Thearpy based strategy supported by this collaborative technology, have also been used to train social competence skills and social conversation in children with HFASD.

We have also used the same hardware to implement another application, the Narration Negotiation and Reconciliation (NNR) table, to explore the role of technology in fostering a shift of attitudes of opponents (in this case Jewish and Arab youth living in Israel and the Palestinian Authority) via a narration task by making use of process-oriented, tangible simulation that respects the participants’ individuality while promoting interaction.  The underlying assumption is the notion that participants may achieve a greater understanding of and appreciation for the other’s viewpoint under conditions in which technology supports the creation of a shared narration.  The participants were co-located and had an explicit view of the unfolding of both a story and the conflicts it revealed. The NNR Table's cooperative and co-located setting together with its rich array of multimedia functionality appeared to be interesting and motivating for the participants who commented positively on the uniqueness of engaging in an activity-based interaction – “doing” - and not just talking. The results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of both the NNR-Table paradigm.
